Give an Old Hutch a New Look

A sweet friend gifted me this gorgeous hutch. I think it was 1 part she didn’t know where to move it into her new home, and 2 parts her husband didn’t want to keep moving it. It is a BEAST! And I love it! But what I didn’t love was the yellowish shade of wood it was. So I knew something had to be done about that.

I wasted no time pulling out my can of Rust-oleum white Chalk Paint. I’ve used Rust-oleum’s Chalk Paint multiple times, and it’s just too easy to use. It’s easy to apply, there is minimal prep, and you can use it on so many surfaces. But with this hutch, I used a product that was new to me. Rust-oleum Chalk Paint Top Coat.

So, backing up a little. I started by giving the whole hutch a good wipe down to clean off any dirt or debris. Then I used my favorite paintbrush to give the entire thing two coats of paint. Chalk paint dries very quickly, so I was able to do this all in a day. I opted to paint the inside back of the hutch a light brown/ beige color. I knew that for the time being, I would be storing my white dishes in there, and I wanted to really allow them to POP, not disappear in all the white. I took some 180-grit sandpaper and distressed the edges a bit to make it look a little more loved and worn. Then one more wipe down with a tack cloth to catch any dust.

Then it was time for the top coat. I used a sponge brush to apply the top coat, being careful to wipe off any excess on the can so I could help avoid drips on the hutch. The top coat is very thin, so it does drip easily, so pay special attention to nooks and corners to catch any before they dry.

Here is what the hutch looks like now in our current home. It fits perfectly in the nook in our primary bathroom. So we use it for linens, cotton balls, Q-tips, and other bathroom essentials. Where could you use a little extra storage in your home? Below you can find my favorite painting products and everything I used on this project.
